Scaling and Seismic Reflectivity: Implications of Scaling on Avo

چکیده

AVO analysis of seismic data is based on the assumption that transitions in the earth consist of jump discontinuities only. The generalization of this type of transition to a more realistic class of transitions shows a drastic change in observed AVO behavior, especially for the large angles currently attained by increasing cable lengths. We propose a simple approach that accounts for this anomalous behavior by renormalizing the observed AVO. This renormalization allows for a separation of the observed AVO effects in terms of a conventional Zoeppritz contribution and a scaling contribution in those cases where the transitions can no longer be considered as isolated jump discontinuities. After renormalization, the inverted fluctuations regain their relative magnitudes which, due to the scaling, may have been significantly distorted. An example of these distortions are tuning effects, often erroneously interpreted as bright spots. INTRODUCTION Observed amplitude-variation-with-offset (AVO) behavior of surface seismic reflection data has led to inferences ranging from the successful identification of hydro-carbon traps (Castagna and Backus, 1993) to the misidentification of AVO anomalies. The reason for this mixed success does not necessarily lie in the data's intricacies but may be caused by oversimplification of the models, and the lack of understanding of both the reflection and propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Recent increases in cable lengths are making these matters even worse. Amongst the various identifiable issues that are responsible, one may mention the current inability to accurately model seismic amplitudes, successfully integrate well and seismic data, and unambiguously interpret AVO.

Prestack seismic amplitude analysis: An integrated overview

In this tutorial, I present an overview of the techniques that are in use for prestack seismic amplitude analysis, current and historical. I show that these techniques can be classified as being based on the computation and analysis of either some type of seismic reflection coefficient series or seismic impedance. Those techniques that are based on the seismic reflection coefficient series, or ...

Report 1 AVO Possibilities With Least Squares Migration

Application of least-squares Kirchhoff migration (LSM) to synthetic reverse vertical seismic profile data (RVSP) demonstrates that LSM reduces the migration artifacts, improves the image resolution and produces a more accurate image than the standard migration, but cannot completely recover the model reflectivity for AVO analysis because of the limited data coverage. The influence of incomplete...

Comparison of seismic and borehole data at the same scale

Well-log measurements and seismic measurements should be compared at the same scale. The conversion of highly detailed borehole data into less detailed seismic data has to be done in a specific way considering conclusions from scaling analysis. One has to be careful with the differentiation to convert borehole acoustic impedance into reflectivity. In addition coarsening has to occur in such a w...

OPTIMAL GROUND MOTION SCALING USING ENHANCED SWARM INTELLIGENCE FOR SIZING DESIGN OF STEEL FRAMES

Dynamic structural responses via time history analysis are highly dependent to characteristics of selected records as the seismic excitation. Ground motion scaling is a well-known solution to reduce such a dependency and increase reliability to the dynamic results. The present work, formulate a twofold problem for optimal spectral matching and performing consequent sizing optimization based on ...

Quantitative gas saturation estimation by frequency- dependent AVO analysis

Seismic amplitudes contain important information which can be related to fluid saturation. The amplitude-versus-offset (AVO) analysis of seismic data based on Gassmann’s theory and approximation of the Zoeppritz equations, has played an central role in reservoir characterization. However, this standard technique faces a long standing problem, its inability to distinguish between partial gas and...
